Today Italy celebrates the "150 anni della Festa dell'Unità d'Italia" , just its 150th anniversary as an unified country.

That very same day Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia was proclaimed by parliament to be Italy's first king. Italy is made up of 20 regions, these regions for centuries were ruled by foreign kingdoms, and small local kingships. The importance of this historic anniversary is being recognized by the Italian government, who has declared the day to be a national holiday for this year only, in order to commemorate this special 150 year anniversary of the nation.

Torino - Turin - was the first capital of unified Italy, earning that distinction on March 17, 1861, and it is here that the lion's share of exhibits and celebrations take place. With experience as host to the 2006 Winter Olympics and last year's showing of the Holy Shroud, Turin is a city capable of handling hordes of visitors.

The landmark birthday is marked by a celebration with extraordinary exhibits of art, fashion and design, with superb dining and fine wines and with events honoring the people who make Italy one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

Happy Birthday Italy!!!!

Sincerely,

Maria Chiacchio.

New Italian Meber to the Denver Community- Denver Nugges!!!

Most people when asked about Italy will think of pizza or pasta, the history, architecture, art, the Roman Empire, renaissance and maybe even soccer. Rarely does someone think basketball when they think of Italy, that has now changed for many Denver Nuggets fans here in Colorado, as they become familiarized with one of their teams newest and most exiting players.

I am talking about Danilo Gallinari one of only three Italians in the NBA who joined the Nuggets only a couple weeks ago. Gallo "the rooster" as he is nicknamed, is one of the brightest young European basketball players in the NBA right now.

Gallinari was born in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano near Milan, where he grew up and started playing professional basketball as a young teen. In the 2007-2008 season Gallinari was voted as the best young basketball player in Europe. He subsequently joined the NBA the next season, but was forced to miss most of the season due to injuries, in his last two seasons Gallinari has shown the quality and promise that made him Europe's best young player in 2008 and is now seen as an important player for the Nuggets future.  It is a true pleasure to have our countryman join us here in Denver and I know he will make us all proud.

Forza Gallo, in bocca al lupo!
