February NewsletterFebruary 2011

Dear Maria,

I am always happy to find the time to write and share all the exiting things that are going on in Italy.  Because of the celebrations of Carnival and San Valentino, February is one of my favorite months to be in Italy and if it happens that you do not see me at the office around the end of this month... you will know where I am!

Il Carnevale di Venezia (The Venice Carnival) is a world-class event, steeped in history, charm and tradition.  Venice's inhabitants and tourists alike have taken an interest in it, thanks to its mix of art, history and culture in one of the most unique cities in the world.

During the ten days of Carnival, Venice is a hive of activity, from improvised street entertainment to performances put on by the organisers. The heart of Carnival is Saint Mark's Square with its huge stage.  However, other events take place throughout the city, helping to avoid an excessive build-up of people in the Square.

A central theme is chosen each year which is often derived from cultural or show-biz ideas. "Ottocento", the nineteenth century evocation, is the inspiration for Carnival 2011. It will be developed through romantic suggestions and Risorgimento impulses, while wearing charming redingotes, top hats, corsets and crinolines.
