Beginner (A1)

Overview
The beginner level is divided into four courses (101, 102, 103). Classes for each course meet once a week over a period of 9 weeks. It will take one year and approximately 90 hours of study (65 hours in the classroom and approximately 30 minutes at home per/week) to complete all three beginner-level courses and their accompanying text, Allegro.

Late Enrollment
Late Enrollment is accepted for beginner level classes up to the end of the third week of classes.

Italian 101

Course Description

After completing Italian 101, students will be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions
  • introduce themselves and others
  • ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, the work they do, and the languages they speak
  • provide their age, phone number and address
  • express gratitude and other expressions of courtesy

At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:

  • personal pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, irregular verbs ('to be', 'to have', 'to do'), regular '-are' verbs, interrogatives, prepositions

Italian 102

Course Description

After completing Italian 102, students will be able to:

  • make reservations, order in a restaurant, ask for the bill
  • discuss free time activities
  • express opinions, preferences, intentions and desires
  • request information regarding accommodations and how to make reservations
  • ask or provide the time, day, month and year

At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:

  • regular '-ere' and '-ire' verbs, irregular verbs ('to want' , 'to prefer', 'to go' and 'to go out'), 'there is' and 'there are', adverbs, adjectives, negations, and indirect pronouns

Italian 103

Course Description

After completing Italian 103, students will be able to:

  • provide and ask for directions
  • describe geographical places
  • refer to events that occurred in the past
  • describe their vacations
  • discuss the weather

At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:

  • 'there is' and 'there are', irregular verbs ('to be able to', 'to come', 'to know' and 'must'), prepositional articles, adjective variability, verbs in the simple past tense, superlatives, double negatives

Published class times are based on a minimum of four students. If class enrollment is less than four, we reserve the right to cancel the class or reduce class time.
