Advanced (B1)
Overview
The advanced level is divided into four courses (301, 302, 303 and 304). Classes for each course meet once a week over a period of 11 weeks. It will take one year and approximately 90 hours of study (60 hours in the classroom and approximately 40 minutes at home per/week) to complete all four advanced-level courses and their accompanying text, Espresso 3.

Italian 301
Text: Espresso 3
Course Description
After completing Italian 301, students will be able to:
- talk about their experience in learning Italian
- describe a city and its problems
- discuss the utility/uselessness of public projects
- argue with someone else
- express agreement or disagreement
At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:
- past perfect tense, object pronouns, negative prefixes, past conditional tense, 'remote' past tense, possessive pronouns

Italian 302

Course Description
After completing Italian 302, students will be able to:
- make suppositions
- formulate justifications
- discuss the media and publicity campaigns
- understand and tell fables
- understand and summarize literary themes
At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:
- past subjunctive tense, future anterior tense, imperfect subjunctive tense, subjunctive with relative superlatives, passive uses of essere and venire

Italian 303

Course Description
After completing Italian 303, students will be able to:
- family politics in Italy and their own countries
- explain the evolution of the family in Italy
- formulate improbable hypotheses
- describe their relationship to traditional and nontraditional holidays
- write a brief situation/role play
At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:
- impersonal form of reflexive verbs, the suffix -bile, absolute superlative forms, pronouns with the gerund, magari and mica, hypothetical expressions

Italian 304

Course Description
After completing Italian 304, students will be able to:
- discuss environment problems and propose solutions
- talk about personal qualities and defects
- express opinions with respect to healthy eating habits
- understand tourist materials
- describe tourist attractions and cultural events
At the grammatical level, students will be able to use:
- past tense of the gerund, past perfect subjunctive form, third person plural in impersonal forms, indirect interrogatives, passive use of andare
